What Are You Waiting For?

Stop and think about the one thing that you’ve been wanting to do. Starting that business. Saving that money. Asking the boss for a raise. Having a difficult talk with someone you love.

Maybe you’ve been putting it off because you don’t feel like you’re ready. You can’t ask for that raise because you don’t have your pitch prepared 100%. You can’t have that important talk with your spouse because you haven’t thought through all the possible outcomes.

I don’t think you should rush into a big decision without thinking things through. Oftentimes, though, we are our own biggest enemy. If it’s not perfect, we won’t even attempt to get started.

In a book I read recently, Bossypants by Tina Fey (this book is hilarious, by the way), she shares a quote from Lorne Michaels, who was in charge of Saturday Night Live at the time that she was working there. The quote was this:

“The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready. It goes on because it’s 11:30.”

That really got me thinking. If a production as huge as Saturday Night Live isn’t always “ready” and is still wildly successful, why can’t I adopt this mentality? Why can’t I put aside my insecurities about something not being perfect and just accept that it has to be done?

So what is it for you? What are you waiting to be “ready” when, in reality, it will never be ready to your standards? Sometimes you just have to stop psyching yourself out and go for it. What are you waiting for?
