Overwhelmed? Try this.

Sometimes life seems to be coming at us from all directions. We’re wearing countless hats at the same time- spouse, friend, parent, worker, volunteer, the list goes on. Here’s one super-quick way to attack your to-do list and feel instantly productive.

I didn’t understand. Give me an hour to get something done that takes 10 minutes, and I wouldn’t get it done. It was like being overwhelmed with stuff to do caused me to mentally shut down and just not. do. anything. Maybe you can relate.

I learned a trick, though. It doesn’t automatically slash your to-do list (although a pair of scissors can do that- hehehe) but it does make you feel instantly productive, which can lead you to tackle more and more of the stuff that’s overwhelming you.

I call it “focused intensity” but you can call it whatever you’d like. Basically, just set a timer for a short period of time and race to see how much you can get done in that time. Seems simple, but it’s a powerful tool for getting stuff done. Set a timer for 10 minutes and get to work on those dishes. You’d be surprised how much you can get done when you work with focused intensity. Or, set a timer for 25 minutes and work on that project your boss wants you to get done. Work diligently and when the timer goes off, you’re done for right now on that project.

It’s much less overwhelming to think “I will work hard on this for 10 minutes” than it is to think “I need to get all this stuff done.”

With this sort of focused intensity, things feel doable instead of overwhelming. My challenge to you is to give it a try, even if it seems silly. I guarantee you’ll be hooked.

I’d love to know, do you utilize focused intensity? Do you use a timer, some songs or something else? Share in the comments section below!
